FROM
TURKISH CANADIAN SOCIETY
April 23,2002
The
first Democratic Grand National Assembly, the parliament of
Turkey, met on April 23, 1920 in Ankara during the
war of independence. Allies occupied the majority of the country
and the Greek Army was advancing towards Ankara. The parliament
laid down the present foundations of an independent, secular
and modern Republic of Turkey and dedicated April 23rd to
the children of Turkey who would advance the country and democratic
principles continuously. UNICEF has recognized the importance
of April 23rd by declaring this special day "International
Children Day".

Our
society celebrated Turkish April 23 National Sovereignty and
Children's Day in Trout Lake Community Center on April 28, 2002.
The festivities were organized by our member Sule Tekbulut,
and assisted by UBC students Cagla Altintas, Gulay Tasmali and
Ayse Sahin. Children sang Turkish songs, danced and had a painting
contest during the festivities. Members brought various Turkish
food and desserts, which were shared among children and guests.
More than 160 members attended the festival and several members
of the society actively assisted during the festivities. Executive
committee members Sekip Okumus, Okan Yilankaya and Abduallh
Kilic attended the meeting and we thank Atanur-Asuman Dogan
for their contributions in the painting contest and organization,
Senkal Ozturkler for membership registration, Veysel Aydin and
Sukru Uludag for organizing the room. We would also like to
thank the many enthusiastic members who contributed to this
very successful event. We thank Sule Tekbulut for her outstanding
voluntary service, which made this day enjoyable by children
and members alike.
